 Throwing Workshop

Combination
of

Giant Pots
 &
Altering Thrown Forms

July 28-30, 2006

This is the first year Robert is offering this unique workshop session.
His desire to give only one "throwing workshop" next summer is joined with his interest in sharing both techniques.

The workshop is three days long.  Participants can take part in making the large pots for which Robert is known for making, or explore the techniques of altering thrown forms.

Choose one or both.

Potters who choose to participate in this workshop are welcome to switch horses mid stream, working in "both" Altering and Large pot avenues, or they can concentrate on just one area.

Robert will demonstrate Throwing Giant Pots every day.
He will also show new techniques in Altering Thrown forms in the morning and afternoon of each workshop day.  There will be lots to choose from for potters participating in this most unusual workshop.

The only topic "not" covered is Altering Thrown Giant Pots.

Altering Thrown Forms

The altering session will focuses on energizing thrown forms.
Potters with intermediate abilities may find the wheel has
new meaning, using it as just the first stage
of working altered forms.

Simple methods of distortion that transform round pots
into rectangles, ovals and squares will be taught.

Some of the avenues of exploration covered will be:
fluting, faceting, twisting, pulling, ribbing, shaving, cut and pasting, adding elements and carving.
Look at Robert's pottery in On Line Gallery to see
some of the forms that will be covered.

Throwing Giant Pots

This is one of the most popular workshops at the Bristol Pottery.
Participants learn and practice techniques for making huge pots.  Methods that do not require strength are emphasized.

Pictorial displays of the coil and throw technique can be seen in the Throwing Giant Pots section of this web site.  Body placement for throwing without the need of strong arms is discussed and methods for making large pots using the "stacked section" demonstration are part of this workshop.

A major component of the workshop involves rapid drying.
This is how big pots can be made so effortlessly.

The same quick dry methods used for making giant pots can be applied
to making pots for Altering Thrown Forms.
